The stories I film

Five kinds of story, five ways to tell them

Each is a kind of story I know how to find and film at your place. One can run as a series, so locals look out for the next one.

Meet the maker

Every place has someone whose hands everyone trusts. This is their story.

“Most people never see this part. It's my favourite bit.”

The maker, in their own words · Sample quote · written for this page

I spend a session with the person who makes the thing people come back for. We talk while they work. I film the place, then the person, then their hands and tools up close.

Your part
Choose who to feature and ask them first. I'll do the rest.
Why locals remember it
People remember a person more easily than a product.
What it gives people a reason to do
Ask for the maker's loaf, cut or blend by name.

The first shift

The quiet hour before the doors open is the most honest part of the day.

I arrive as the lights come on and film the place waking up. Nobody has to talk. Locals see the care that goes in before they ever walk in.

Your part
Let me in early on filming days and carry on as normal.
Why locals remember it
It shows the care that goes in before anyone walks through the door.
What it gives people a reason to do
Come early for the first bake or the first coffee.

Behind the counter

Customers see the result. This shows them the skill.

  3. Writing the label by hand

I film the small skills that make a place feel expert, then cut them into short clips that are a pleasure to watch.

Your part
Tell me what you're proudest of. Do it the way you always do.
Why locals remember it
Seeing the skill makes the price make sense.
What it gives people a reason to do
Try the thing they just watched being made.

The regulars

Why people keep coming back, in their words, with their permission.

Same table, same angle, a different usual each time, so people know it's a series. With their blessing, I ask a few regulars what keeps them coming in and film their usual.

  • A flat white

  • A pot of tea

  • The paper

  • A croissant

  • Two cups

  • A bowl for the dog

Six regulars, one fixed frame. In the real series each has a short quote, given with permission. Concept drawing · not client work
Your part
Suggest a few regulars who might enjoy it. I'll ask them properly.
Why locals remember it
People trust other locals more than any advert.
What it gives people a reason to do
Feel welcome to become a regular too.

Start to finish

One dish or product, from first step to last.

Flour to loaf, beans to cup, bucket to bouquet. These films are satisfying to watch and they show the work behind the price.
